SSCC Commemorates the First Anniversary of Death of Senator Heherson Alvarez
SSCC commemorates the first anniversary of passing away of its former distinguished Policy Advisory Board Member, former Senator and Minister Heherson Alvarez, world champion for human rights and protection of environment.
SSCC received the following information from Manila which declares yearly commemoration of his death through webinars on climate change.
Environmentalist, Statesman, Alphan.
In commemoration of the 1st death anniversary of Former Senator FLC Heherson “Sonny” Alvarez ΑΦβ 1952, the Alpha Phi Beta Fraternity pays tribute to the late Senator’s environmental advocacies with an event entitled the Sen. Heherson Alvarez Earth Day Forum to be held on April 22, the day Senator Alvarez himself authored in the Senate and designated as Earth Day, which is now celebrated annually nationwide. In his decorated public service spanning almost five decades, FLC Sonny took on various posts in relation to his environmental advocacy, earning him the nickname “Mr. Environment”. Most notable among these was his post as the Secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and his chairmanship of the Climate Change Commission from 2010 to 2015. FLC Sonny was also credited with authoring several key environmental laws during his time as a legislator, including landmark laws such as the Clean Air Act (RA 8749) and the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act (Republic Act No. 9003), as well as pushing for the development and inception of the Department of Energy.
In more ways than one, Senator Alvarez left an indelible mark in public service with his admirable spirit of environmentalism and conservationism, and he will forever be remembered as a champion of the environment. As the threat of climate change and environmental degradation continues to loom over our country, we believe that a model environmentalist and statesman such as Sen. Alvarez can help inspire a new generation of Filipinos to protect our environment and join the global effort to stem the effects of climate change.
We cordially invite you all to join us in our celebration of FLC Sonny Alvarez’s proud legacy, and to participate in our Earth Day festivities. The Sen. Heherson Alvarez Earth Day Forum will be broadcast live on our official Facebook page and those of our media partners on April 22, 2021, from 6:00-7:30PM. We are proud to announce our lineup of speakers who will be gracing our event with their presence and expertise
