SSCC at COP29: Strengthening Global Environmental Cooperation

The South-South Cooperation Council (SSCC) continued its active participation at COP29, engaging in two significant side events that underscored its commitment to climate action and sustainable development.

Forests and Climate Change: Brazil's Initiative

The first event, organized by Brazil, focused on the critical link between forests and climate change. SSCC representatives, including Cecile Alvarez and Dewy Sacayan, Regional Coordinator for South East Asia, actively participated in the discussions. Their contributions emphasized the role of forests as carbon sinks and their importance in achieving global climate goals.

During the event, both representatives held strategic talks with officials from Brazil’s Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. These discussions aimed at fostering deeper collaborations on environmental protection and South-South partnerships.

Water Sustainability: Indian-Led Panel

The second event highlighted the importance of water resources in climate resilience, organized by leading Indian organizations. Cecile Alvarez served as a distinguished panelist, sharing insights on the integration of water management strategies within climate action frameworks. Her participation underscored the critical need for equitable access to water resources in the face of global warming.

Both events demonstrated SSCC's dedication to addressing diverse environmental challenges through international cooperation and knowledge exchange.

Participants collectively signed a declaration to support the UN Pact for the Future, advocating for the integration of cultural components within COP frameworks. This act symbolizes a unified commitment to advancing climate education and equity through cultural dialogue.

Adding a powerful visual narrative to the event, Danish sculptor Jens Galschiot presented his impactful bronze statue, "Justitia." The sculpture portrays a blindfolded woman, symbolizing the global north's willful ignorance towards inequalities, notably in climate responsibilities. This poignant artwork stood as a reminder of the urgent need for equitable climate action.
