Latin American Forum of Ideas Celebrates 15 Years of the Latin American Presidential Mission with Cultural and Climate Focus

On November 28 and 29, 2024, Asunción, Paraguay, became the epicenter of Latin American collaboration and innovation, hosting the Latin American Forum of Ideas: Connecting the Present with the Future. This landmark event commemorated the 15th Anniversary of the Latin American Presidential Mission, which unites 32 former presidents of the region to promote peace, development, and sustainability.

The forum, a collaborative effort of the Global Peace Foundation, Fundación Esquipulas, and other regional organizations, served as a catalyst for impactful dialogue and action. With its themes encompassing sustainability, governance, and education, the forum explored Paraguay's pivotal role as a strategic regional hub, leveraging its unique position between Brazil and Argentina to foster innovation and progress​.

SSCC's Role and the Baku Declaration

Among the key contributors was Dr. Viktor Sebek, Chairman of the South-South Cooperation Council (SSCC). Dr. Sebek presented the Baku Declaration, a pivotal document emphasizing the intersection of culture, climate, and innovation. Signed at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, this resolution integrates arts and indigenous heritage into climate action, leveraging cultural expression to inspire meaningful change​.

The declaration will guide preparations for COP30 in Belém, Brazil, facilitated by Earthsavers Philippines, UNESCO Artists for Peace, and Latin American partners. This collaborative effort underscores the vital role of cultural diplomacy in achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Cultural Highlights: A Beatles-Inspired Gala

A notable highlight of the forum was the Beatles Tribute Gala on November 28. Julian Lennon, son of John Lennon, delivered a heartfelt rendition of Imagine, joined by Paraguayan artists and a symphony orchestra celebrating the Beatles' legacy. This event embodied the power of cultural unity in addressing global challenges​​.

Honoring Leadership and Vision

Three founding members of the Latin American Presidential Mission, former Presidents Vinicio Cerezo (Guatemala), Luis Alberto Lacalle Herrera (Uruguay), and Juan Carlos Wasmosy (Paraguay), received special honors for their leadership and vision. Their efforts have significantly contributed to advancing South-South cooperation and fostering regional stability​​.

Elevating Latin America's Global Role

The forum's agenda highlighted six thematic areas, including sustainable strategies, governance innovation, and digital transformation. Discussions featured distinguished leaders, academics, and policymakers, emphasizing the region’s capacity to influence global decision-making.

Paraguay’s role as host was particularly celebrated, showcasing its rich cultural heritage and innovative potential. This recognition aligns with the broader goals of the SSCC to connect nations through cooperative initiatives, fostering equitable and sustainable progress.
