SCC is deeply involved on different issues relating to climate change and is already preparing for COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. It welcomes the forthcoming Manila Conference on climate change refugees and is proud that its Youth Ambassador Regional Coordinator for South-East Asia, Dewy Sacayan, will deliver a speech. The purpose of the conference, which will be held on 20th June, is to discuss the latest Bill present to legislators in the Philippines to amend the Immigration Act of 1940 to take into account environmental refugees from small island states.
ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM
The Symposium will convene legislators, scholars, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss and bring awareness to the profound impact of climate change, particularly in relation to climate-induced migration and its implications for both the Philippines and the global community.
The bill in question, House Bill No. 10490, was filed to amend Section 47 of the Philippine Immigration Act of 1940, to include environmental migrants from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in order for them to qualify as refugees. It was authored by Congressman Edcel C. Lagman, Congressman Pablo John F. Garcia, Congressman Samuel S. Verzosa Jr., Congressman Robert Ace S. Barbers, and Congressman Ziaur-Rahman A. Adiong.
